Sialic acid, scientifically known as N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), is a naturally occurring nine-carbon monosaccharide acidic amino sugar. As the most important member of the sialic acid family, its molecular structure contains a carboxyl group and an acetylamino group, a unique structure that gives it unique biological activity. In nature, bird's nest acid is primarily found at the ends of glycoproteins and glycolipids on the surface of animal cell membranes. It is most abundant in bird's nests, breast milk (especially colostrum), cerebrospinal fluid, and neural tissue.
